Chanel Paris-Shanghai 2010 Handcraft Series
Chanel's latest collection marked a shift from its previous one-sided presentations, embracing Chinese elements as a major source of inspiration. The influence of China is evident throughout the entire series. The Shanghai-inspired look is primarily in black, with bold Chinese red and lucky emerald green also making a strong appearance. Classic tweed suits are reimagined with traditional Chinese Fengxian collars and slanted button plackets. A shoulder-padded suit and a hat, reminiscent of a padded jacket, were beautifully crafted using black feathers from the renowned Lemarie feather workshop. Additionally, several pieces featured Chinese silk textures, all contributing to a rich and unmistakable Chinese aesthetic.
Since 2002, Karl Lagerfeld has been creating a series of Chanel collections inspired by different cities around the world. From Paris to Tokyo, New York, Monaco, London, and Moscow, Shanghai became the eighth city in this artistic journey. Although Coco Chanel herself never visited China, she was deeply fascinated by Chinese art. The brand owns several Chinese antiques, including ebony-embedded screens and porcelain. Lagerfeld himself had a deep admiration for Shanghai, describing it as mysterious and full of charm. He often referenced "Shanghai women," "Chinese-style clothing," and "Wu Wu screens" as symbols of his vision for the city.
To celebrate the Shanghai theme, an exclusive collection was launched for the Shanghai Peninsula Boutique, featuring delicate chiffon shirts with printed patterns, a camellia brooch, and a flowing chiffon shawl—each piece drawing inspiration from the Chinese lacquer screen that Coco Chanel loved. This collection not only highlights the cultural exchange between East and West but also showcases Chanel’s continued innovation and respect for tradition.
