US Christmas prices will increase by 10% from last year
According to the latest survey by the National Retail Federation (NRF), this year’s Thanksgiving weekend shopping season saw a significant rise in consumer spending, with average spending per person expected to increase by 6.4% compared to last year. Department stores emerged as the biggest draw, capturing the highest number of shoppers. As the holiday season approaches, the Christmas shopping period is also showing strong signs of growth. According to PNC Financial Services Group, the Christmas price index is projected to rise by 10.8% this year.
From November 25 to November 28, the overall retail shopping crowd increased by 8.7% compared to the same period in 2009, reaching nearly 212 million people. During this four-day period, total retail sales are estimated to reach $45 billion, up from $41.2 billion in the previous year. The NRF reported that the average spending per person this year climbed to $365.34, an increase from $343.31 in 2022.
The study also revealed that 52% of respondents planned to shop at department stores this year, compared to 49.4% in the previous year. Similarly, clothing stores saw a slight increase in foot traffic, rising from 22.9% to 24.4%. With consumer spending making up about 70% of the U.S. economy, experts believe that as people continue to feel financially secure, they will keep spending—especially if they don’t limit their purchases to Black Friday.
In addition, the cost of buying all 364 items mentioned in the classic song "The Twelve Days of Christmas" is expected to reach $98,224 this year, up 10.8% from last year. While rising prices can be concerning, the head of investment at PNC noted that not all price increases are negative. He said, “The good news is that the economy is improving, and we’re starting to see prices gradually rise.†This suggests a more positive outlook for the holiday shopping season ahead.
