Do not drop anti-rising suspected of hype secret mahogany furniture price storm

In recent years, the mahogany furniture market has experienced dramatic fluctuations. In 2007, a set of mahogany furniture was showcased at the ASEAN Expo with a price tag of 80 million yuan. However, by 2010, the same type of furniture was being sold for as little as 200,000 yuan, marking a sharp decline in value. Within just three years, the price had plummeted from “heaven” to “underground.” This shocking news sent shockwaves through the redwood speculation community, prompting many investors to panic and rush to sell their stocks. Yet, not everyone shared the same fear. Some industry insiders argued that both rising and falling prices were driven by speculation, and many mahogany traders found themselves caught in a difficult situation—“riding a tiger” and unable to get off. Despite the media reports claiming a significant drop in prices, some shop owners in Beijing’s antique markets told reporters that they hadn’t noticed any real decline in sales or pricing. Mr. Li, owner of Hainan Huanghuali Furniture Co., Ltd., said he had seen the news about falling prices but claimed that his business had not been affected. Many other shopkeepers echoed similar sentiments, some even dismissing the reports as false. “The price hasn’t really dropped,” one store owner said, adding that the rumors were exaggerated. Reporters also visited several furniture markets in northern Beijing and found few signs of price cuts. While some stores displayed “price reduction” banners, most businesses indicated that there had been only minor fluctuations. In fact, some merchants noted that raw material costs had risen, and they expected prices to increase slightly by year-end. Mr. Liu, another furniture business owner, criticized the sensationalized reports, pointing out that claims like “Suanzhi wood dropped from 800,000 yuan per ton to less than 10,000 yuan” were misleading. He emphasized that while raw material costs had increased, the price of rosewood had not fallen to such an extent. Wang Yuan, a factory owner from Hebei, confirmed that the cost of red rosewood had risen significantly—from 40,000 yuan per ton to 60,000 yuan. This suggests that the industry is still facing pressure from rising material costs. Experts believe that the so-called “price plunge” may be more of a speculative manipulation rather than a genuine market correction. Industry insiders pointed out that the lack of regulation and oversight has created a breeding ground for speculation. Some professional speculators use events like trade fairs to artificially inflate or deflate prices, making it hard for consumers to tell the real story. According to Mr. Sun, a collector and industry insider, the mahogany furniture market has long been plagued by unregulated speculation. He explained that some speculators would sell high-priced custom sets while simultaneously selling the raw materials for profit. Others simply ride the wave of trends, hoping to cash in when the market turns. To address this issue, the Beijing Furniture Association and Xuanming Classical Residence introduced a “transparent pricing” system, where all costs—raw materials, labor, and salaries—are clearly listed, along with a reasonable profit margin. This helps consumers make informed decisions and reduces the risk of being misled. Professor Yang Jiaxuan from the Institute of Wood Industry at Beijing Forestry University advises buyers to follow three steps: understand international redwood standards, compare products, and ensure the wood species is clearly stated on the contract. He also warns that fake mahogany furniture, often made from cheaper woods like Asian pear, can deceive unsuspecting buyers. While the market remains complex, some brands are taking steps to improve transparency. Professor Yang believes that industry self-regulation and cooperation will be key to building a more trustworthy and stable mahogany furniture market in Beijing.
